Gapminder
Like SpicyNodes, Gapminder is a Flash-powered animated and interactive tool for visualizing information. It uses Trendalyzer, visualization software owned by Google, to produce videos and maintain a Web service. The current version of Gapminder depicts animated statistical and historical data about the development of the countries of the world. A newly launched service, Gapminder Graphs, enables the conversion of user-supplied data into Gapminder-like bubble graphs that can then be published on any web site. Although Gapminder and SpicyNodes share animation and interactivity, and both create similar displays, SpicyNodes does not give equal weight to all items plotted on the display. Instead, SpicyNodes’ algorithms have been optimized to bring a single item into central focus, and substitute graphic depictions for related items.
